That happened to me when I ordered the Harry Potter 4K steelbook box set from Best Buy. I canceled it when the pre-order price never came down. I got the cancelation e-mail, no charge was made, and when I came home from work the Friday after release, there was a box waiting for me.
I opened it and there was the steelbook set in all its glory. I waited a couple of weeks to see if I would get charged, nothing happened, and I was the owner of a free set!
