The audio ends up analog either way. The player does the conversion with multichannel analog and the receiver does it with HDMI. The difference is the quality of the DACs and the processing capabilities of each device.
AVRs tend to have better DACS, better bass management, and many can apply EQ for rooms that need it. So, HDMI is usually the recommended path.
But, if your player has better processing tools than your receiver, which could be the case with an HTIB, then multichannel analog would be better.
In many cases, there really isn't much difference.
