In the mid 19th century, cowboys were a common sight in New York City patrolling the streets, but it wasn't cattle they were herding. Rather, it was people. Cowboys working in New York had to protect New Yorkers from a very different kind of threat. Fast moving freight trains moved up and down Tenth, Eleventh, and Twelfth avenues, and regularly killed pedestrians. So many people were killed that it earned the nickname "Death Avenue."
