The Club Silencio scene is where this is explained. The entire movie is an exercise in diversion. It wants you to believe that there is something, anything there, under its surface. In the end. Silence.
Music plays but there is no band. The woman sings but she is not singing. They show you something to make you believe but in the end, it's all fake.
