The original Director's Edition of Star Trek: The Motion Picture was released on November 6th, 2001. This edition incorporates some of the added footage that was seen in the 'Special Longer Version' such as Uhura boasting about Kirk, McCoy's extended entrance, Ilia healing Chekov and Spock having sympathy for V'Ger before the climax.

That edition also incorporated a few new special effects shots that were designed and implemented with the intent of looking like it could have been created back in the day if the film had more post-production time.

The problem with the original Director's Edition was that everything was done in standard definition. Back in 2001 there was no 4K, blu-ray, or any home video high-definition releases. So when the next format eventaully came along, there was no HD source for the Director's Edition so for the past two decades, we've been stuck with that DVD.

For this new edition, everyone who worked on the original version was brought back and they've redone the film from the ground up. Not only is everything being done for a 4K presentaiton, they're also taking individual effect elements and re-rotoscoping them. The resulting video will not only look sharper than the previous presentation, it will also fix some of the issues that plagued the recent 4K disc, like the long shot of the Enterprise leaving Drydock.

So far, everyone involved has assured fans that a disc release will be coming. They just need to clear the Paramount + streaming window in order to get there. This is great news because this will give the crew even more time to work on the film if there is still any work needed to be done or any missed fixes they inded to incorporate. That happened on the TNG blu-ray sets.

As of this post, there has been no announcement for a release of the SLV on home video.
