Quickly, as a format: More capacity and higher bitrates for data transmission, so the picture stays clear during fast-action sequences. The extra capacity allows for less compression, so the more of the film's original quality is preserved. The hard-coating is very nice, too.

On a greater scale, Blu-ray has far more industry support. Just take a look on the homepage of this site to see who all has been announcing BD players. Toshiba is still the only hardware supporter of HD DVD (the xbox 360 add-on is a Toshiba drive).

Follow JTK's advice and just look around.
