I always took the original as kind of a sly commentary on the whole action genre. Like here are these insanely musclebound guys packing the most sophisticated heavy artillery imaginable and they’re basically impotent in the face of a single enemy. In the end, you can win, just survive, and to do it, Arnold has to become a force as primal as the jungle.

The big reason their weapons weren't effective is because they couldn't see him with the camouflage on. So they tore up the forest shooting at nothing. If they could have seen their target, those weapons would have shredded the predator with all of those heavy weapons being fired. The fact he did get grazed by one shot showed his was vulnerable. It was his invisibility that was his greatest protection.
They were at a huge disadvantage because they were being taken by surprise by an an invisible enemy. If he didn't have his cloak, he would have been no match for all of them.
