The controls of the earlier games were a challenge, though probably added to the tension when a monster was attacking, as the player panics a little bit with the controls, trying to figure out how to back up or get out of a corner to safety. I was replaying SH1 last week since maybe 15 years ago, and when that flying gargoyle attacked through the window, I got stuck in a corner and the character died on my first try. Just exploring is fine, but it'll be really nice to have much more responsive, intuitive controls with this remake.

Some may argue the tank controls are the best, but in real life, who moves like that, pivoting on a center circle to turn around slowly when being attacked, pushing down to back up, and up to move forward? Just let the player point the analog stick to where they want to run, keep it simple and the game will be much more responsive and intuitive. Plus they could add the option for tank controls for diehard fans.
You are right. A part of the original SH as well as the original RE series' success has to be credited to the locked camera angles and awkward controls. In 2022-23, however, I expect nothing less than a 360° camera and/or a sandbox open-world environment. If things are done right, like speeding up the enemies' reaction time; I think the SH2 remake can still be scary as hell.
