0db usually means reference levels on most receivers.

For instance take a THX Ultra2 receiver designed to fill a 2000 and some odd cubic foot room with a peak sound of 104 decibles. If that receiver is used in the environment it was meant to, you would have to put your receiver up to 0db to hear the soundtrack of the movie how the director intended it to be heard.
