While I'm sure some interchange the terms, an 'Audio Tower' is simply a vertically-arranged shelf unit that's wide and deep enough for standard audio components. This is what most use when it's part of their decor.

An 'Equipment Rack' is usually more robust and/or industrial - it typically has steel supports, the front two of which have holes from top to bottom to allow rigid mounting of rack-mountable components (high-end pre/pros, amps, etc.). Wooden versions may have steel rails mounted just inside, from top to bottom. Many have built-in cooling fans (or provisions for them). These are usually only employed by those with super high-end setups, and are typically hidden. Same idea as a server rack.
