Yes, Sony was stupid or evil enough to require an up to date accurate date on the console, even when the end date of the content is 12/31/9999.
This was never patched. They patched the PS4, which had the same issue, but even refused to play discs, but not the PS3.

Just to be clear: PS3 doesn't need a CMOS battery to play physical games and never has.
