The extra divers on a tower speaker can help to deliver better bass and midrange. Of course there are some speakers that have one driver that can do better then 2 or 3 drivers on another speaker.

For instance, take the
Monitor 50s/TSi300s Frequency 42hz-24khz sensitivity 89 dB 1-1" tweeter 2-5-1/4" drivers
Monitor 60s/TSi400s Frequency 38hz-24khz sensitivity 90 dB 1-1"tweeter 3-5-1/4" drivers
Energy C-300 Frequency 40hz-20khz sensitvity 92 dB 1-1" tweeter 1-6-1/2" woofer

There you can see that the single woofered C-300 can deliver the same response as both the monitors with multiple woofers. It also has a higher sensitivity so it is easier to drive them. Bear in mind that we're not discussing how they sound just that there are speakers that can produce the same response and sensitivity as others with fewer drivers. I am also not saying that one speaker is more efficient then another either.

Now when I listened to the TSi400s the other day at BB the low end extension was not as good as I thought it would be, and there wasn't much of a thump to the bass. I now that polk speakers play to the highs, but I was currious of the midrange play, the TSi 400s were more impressive in the mids then the Monitor 60s to me but they weren't as open as I am used to. On my Energys, I notice more of a thump in the low end when playing music in 2-channel. The mid bass and lower extension is deeper sounding. So in this example the Energys have a smoother and more open midrange while still having a deeper low end extension.

There are also full range drivers that can play 20Hz-20kHz, so just the fact that a speaker has one driver verses 2 or 3 doesn't mean that the mids or bass is that much better with multiple drivers. Typically mfgs use the array of woofers to seperate the duties of the speakers, mid play the mids, woofers the bass and tweeters the highs. But it doesn't mean a speaker with less drivers can't perform those duties more effectively.

I hope all that helps you! (if someone more knowledgable can correct anything I said or say it better or add some insight, please, by all means.)
