I learned this little trick when I had a slight problem playing my Ghost Rider disc. I have the Sony BD-S300.
I popped in disc one of Planet Earth just to get a taste of what it has to offer. Wouldn't you know it, it paused on the opening screen of "2 | Entertain", only it never got past panning the 2. I was fortunate to get the series narrated by David Attenborough and not Sigorney Weaver, so I was not about to give this baby up!
Long story short. I restart the disc. When it starts to play I press [stop] once before it gets jacked by the player. In resume mode I press [top menu] on the remote and it opens to the main menu. 
It then seems to play normally. The other 3 discs start and play normally far as I can tell.
I'll report this to Sony as I am hoping firmware will fix this issue. This trick could work on many other discs where you want to bypass the opening sequences and go straight to the menu. This did not work with POTC 2 as pressing [stop] was an "invalid function on this disc."
From the brief few seconds I watched while scanning through the series, I can see I will be in for a stunning treat. Will be a pleasure to watch this masterpiece of God's creations without seeing a logo in the corner of the screen.
