Swank is never boring and doesn't disappoint playing an over the top, rather colorful character but the real surprise here is Ritchson (yes, it's Reacher!). He is actually quite good as the anguished father, in over his head, and never hits a fake note throughout the endeavor. Up to now, Ritchson has been known primarily for playing action roles but the man can act.

Point blank, I'm an atheist and only went to see this because I've been a Hilary Swank fan for over 20 years but I agree with your assessment. The film really was never preachy and Alan Ritchson, an actor I'm unfamiliar with, matched Swank the whole way through. Straightforward and safe but made with a lot of heart and goodwill. This irreligious viewer liked it just fine and
[Show spoiler]I'm very happy the way things all worked out in the end and that Sharon and Ed remain friends to this day
