as much as id adhere to a standard 5.1 setup, soundbars do what their supposed to do, providing a substantial upgrade to a regular television speaker setup.

Not all are powered. My deftech ssa-50 5.0 speaker bar isn't. I'm powering it with my pioneer elite sc-05. This speaker bar puts outs incredible sound and retails for $1100. I'll be adding real surrounds and a sub soon for 7.1 in my bedroom. I would go with something that isn't powered by itself and allows for real surrounds and a sub of your choice. If you want it powered by itself...I'd go with the speaker bars that try to 'simulate' surround sound. Polk...Deftech...higher end Yamahas are the only soundbars I've heard and can vouch for.
