Regarding the ancient OP, AC-3 (as well as EAC-3 and TrueHD) does indeed have more DRC metadata than DTS (DCA and DTS-HD), making an AC3 track sound better on TV speakers than a DTS track. IME, modern receivers do good enough job at compressing DTS and PCM tracks (when set to "min" range or equivalent) to make this a moot point, though. I also find that it's easier to appreciate wider dynamic ranges when using earphones or headphones than speakers (regardless of speaker count); a lot of the difficulty hearing comes from room acoustics.

And no, I don't care so much about annoying my neighbors as much as I do ensuring my hearing lasts.
