Jim might not have the money to hire Connor, or might not feel he's qualified to work at the tire shop. But you're right in saying that there are other jobs Connor could get. You would handle it better as a parent, in my opinion. Instead of making your son work in the same building as you, you'd tell him, "I don't care what kind of job you get as long as you get a job by (insert date here)." Maybe in Season 2, he'll start working alongside Chloe at the music store. Or maybe he'll form a traveling music group. Connor, Chloe, and Dale could be a musical trio that would play music at birthday parties and wedding receptions. But I imagine the show's writers can come up with something better. We'll just have to wait and see.
I'm just glad the show isn't neglecting Connor the way "The Big Bang Theory" neglected Raj. A lot of the time, Raj was barely in the show.
