Or was it that they only ever intended 6 episodes from the get-go. Admittedly it woud be hard to maintain a freshness to the style of humour in that show.

Yes! Three books, so you would assume three series. And the second (and last!) series ended on a cliffhanger. Had to read the books to find out what happened.
