With really no budget, I recommend going out and listening to receivers and speakers first. Different receivers and speakers (and these combinations) can yield different sounds. You are the only one who knows what your ears will like. For receivers only, check out the higher end Onkyo 805, 806, 875, or 876, the Pioneer Elite SC-21, 23, 25 or 27, the Denon 2310, 3310, 4308, 4310 or 5308, the Marantz 6000, 7000 or 8000 series or Yamaha's 1900, 2700 or 3900. You could get into seperates with a pre/pro and an additional external amp. But I'll refrain from getting into this area, as I am not as well versed or knowledgable about these set-ups as I would like to be. For speakers, check out Paradigms, B&W, Cerwin Vega, Monitor Audio, Snell, Swan, Totem, Infinity, KEF, Polks, Energy or Klipsch. These speakers all vary in their prices and performance, so only your ears can really make the decision. Some of the speakers also look beautiful and could get the wife's approval as well.
