As far of 1/4 of the way up gain killing the room, that would be largley effected by the sub's level within the receiver's setting as well. One could keep the sub's gain low, and crank the sub's level on the receiver so it's hard to say. 1/4 of the way up and killing a room sounds a little far fetched to me if the sub was actually set in the middle or at a default setting within the receiver's settings.
I prefer to keep the receiver's sub level at default, and adjust the sub, by the sub's amp.
