It's from a true-life solution the HD-DVD supporters/fanatics have found to get their HD-DVD combo discs to play. Apparently there is some wax layer or something that had stayed on. It should've been rinsed off at the replicating line.
So rinsing them in hot water seemed to have worked. Some of them went the extra mile with boiling hot water.
Hence the story stuck. If you think I'm making it up, well truth is stranger than fiction.
