The thing about IMAX is the MUCH larger film. A filmed element on IMAX film is over 2x as big as the same element on 35mm, and this makes for greater resolution and finer grain, both of which are seen as necessary to project on the enormous IMAX screens..

if it was shot in regular 70mm the aspect ratio would have been 2.20:1 and 8-channel sound - five channels up in the front for a wider more dynamic soundfield.
