While I tend to believe it as mostly marketing B.S. I also know the cable can make a difference.
The thickness of the cable indicates how much bandwidth it can carry and on how many channels at maximum load. Maybe people get by on cheaper cables because they aren't using the full bandwidth. But once you do, the signal gets scewed and can impact signal performance. Maybe they are a mm thicker and therefore the right cable for HDMI 1.3
Short of cutting both type of cables to measure the thickness of the bare wire, we need to find industry specs for such things, or have an insider tell us the truth.
