I can't say what you saw, but if you are really from Ireland wouldn't you write it Eireland?
The digital projection theaters I have seen I can see the image pixelation but the primary improvement is just general image sharpness. I don't think the theaters I visit use 4K yet so I don't know what resolution mine have. However the kids running the projectors now have the digital projection as an excuse to not be able to focus the old film style displays, which can be extremely annoying. None of the analog films have a sharp image from top to bottom and sometimes none of it is in focus, they could care less, which makes it hard to be sympathetic to their slow demise.
