I know this is an old thread, but just an update on those who might be looking up this info in the future, as I did. I just bought the sr705 to run my other room. Read about the firmware upgrade problem, went on Onkyo website to register product and downloaded the firmware. Burned the .wav on a cd and tried to play it through my old PS2 which was hooked up to the Onkyo, wouldn't work as stated above with the same issues. I went and got my Sony S360 bluray player and hooked it up to the sr705, played the disc and the firmware loaded up exactly as stated in the instructions.
So the point is... as mentioned in the instructions. The firmware update MAY NOT work with some players, in this case your PS3, Xbox, PS2... unfortunately the other bad news is knowing and trying to get a player that is compatible, luckily the Sony S360 worked for me. Hope this helps.
