Keep in mind that, like you said, not all Blus are created equal. Basically, not all handling of transfers are created equal. Some companies apply digital noise reduction, some don't. Etc.
How about the picture setting adjustments on a BD player? Some players have a rather extensive selection to tweak the picture. The LG BD390 I own is loaded with a wide range of changes that can be made within an option from - to +.

And I'm sure manufacturers feel the need to have at least some options available to the viewer who bought their product even with the display calibrated. Your yourself mentioned some companies applying DNR for instance and player manufacturers know that as well.

Heck some folks are so good at adjustments they insist they can take a budget player and get it close to a much higher quality unit on the market!
