It is sad, but may well be for the best. My Mother in law had a severe brain stem stroke at the age of 52. Strokes like that kill more than 90% of people, but she did survive because she was so healthy otherwise. It may sound wrong, but I often feel it would have been better for her had she not survived it. She can not walk, speak, use the left side of her body at all, very limited use of the right side; or even safely swallow food. She will live the rest of her life in a nursing home, subsisting on pureed foods and thickened liquids which cause her frequent repiratory infections due to aspiration. That often feels more tragic than death.
