What is the twist you are talking about? The introduction of the second camera, or the return of Angela Vidal?
I was very pleasantly surprised by this movie. I think the original REC was always meant as an experiment in form. Remember how the origin of the zombie infection was hardly explained? It was as if the directors were saying: "Just pick any origin story from whatever zombie movie you like and copy and paste into our movie. We're not going to waste screen time on that. Not what our movie is about"
What it was about, of course, is the idea of having the camera that films the movie, be a character in the movie.
Now, a sequel has to abide by a form of it's own. For starters, it has to up the ante somehow. Usually this means more Aliens, or more killings...
Also, it has to tie into the universe of the original movie. Typically this is done by having the killer return (e.g. Freddy) or having the victim return (e.g. Sydney Prescott).
So if the original idea is to have an in-movie camera, what better way to design a sequel than to have two? I thought it was a brilliant idea.
And the return of Angela Vidal nicely hooks the sequel up with the original. I tell you, when she first appears I was reminded of a young Sigourney Weaver, except that she was carrying a camera instead of a pulse rifle, and she looked scared shitless instead of brave. But that is just the character of Angela Vidal for you...
Finally, Rec 2 also paves the way for a 3rd and final installment. For if the idea of the sequel is to have 2 camera's, than surely in Rec 3 there must be many. Maybe it can be about people posting YouTube videos as the infection spreads across Spain. And soon, the passive watchers become part of the story they are watching, as the zombies reach their neighborhood, or something.
If they try to make a third I'll be sure to check it out...
