Subs generally just do what they are told... the fact that it is happening right when you switch audio modes makes me think it's a receiver problem. Also it sounds like an electronic problem so not something easily fixable...
Sorry for the bad news... although good subs can cost as much as good receivers I suppose. I myself am stuck with a non-HDMI receiver
