I actually wouldn't blame either
[Show spoiler]I would blame the retolling that was forced upon the director and actor during reshots. For more info have a look at the thread in the movies section there's a link or two about this. There was nothing wrong with the performance of Nesson, he did wha the could do and acted pitrch perfect in every scene, the issue was it simply didn't make sense and if Neson can't make it work, nearly no one can
