I can't really say. I don't know what sort of prices you can expect with the early 1080p 3D ready projectors. I would guess that the more affordable ones will still come in between $3000-$4000. I'm just guessing though. I myself went with a 720p 3D projector on the cheap, and I'm happy. I haven't gotten my glasses yet, but I plan to shortly.
To put things in perspective though...I have a Pioneer KRP-500M which has the best picture available yet I rarely use it as more than a computer monitor these days. I do all of my movie watching and game playing on my projector now.
It has a great picture, and even though it isn't as good as the Kuro's picture it makes up for it in size. The picture is actually better than the Panny in my bedroom though which has a very good picture itself. I'm getting about a 94" picture from my throw distance, and I just can't see myself going back to a 50" screen.
My projector was less than $800 shipped. I may upgrade to a 1080p one when the prices get to around a grand which I'm sure is a few years off, so I'm good. My advice is to have both a TV and a projector though. My computer serves as my online media hub and I wouldn't want to use the projector for several hours a day like I do with my Kuro.
I don't really watch TV which is why the Kuro serves as a monitor mostly, but if I did watch a lot of TV then I wouldn't want to do it on the projector since it would eat up lamp life. Just my opinion. Everyone is different, and some people use nothing but a projector. I myself would rather conserve lamp life.
