Agreed, there are others on the site who like to spend that much for one speaker but that might be overkill. For about $3000, you can get the Monitor Audio silver series 5.1 setup and sub. You could either get another pair of small surround speakers to match or you could leave it at 5.1 since there is not much 7.1 audio out yet anyways!
Speakers are something that you need to try for yourself though. Some good "value" brands to start with are Klipsh and Polk. The Monitors are a bit more, but they look and sound wonderful!
