In an interview with the writer/director, Chris Weitz, posted on Sci-Fi Weekly
http://www.scifi.com/sfw/news/sfw_news_20071203.html he said they dropped the last three chapters of the book from the movie (although they did shoot it) to end the movie with a cliffhanger. The cut chapters will be included in the next movie (if filmed).
