Default Can you all tell me these recording choices with Blu-Ray

Can you all tell me if Blu-Ray will be able to record in high definition using all of the time allowed in the GB that it will be released in at first? My understanding is that it will have options like a VHS tape in terms of quality and length of time you want to have recorded on it. How is this compared to the HD-DVDs? I understand they won't be able to hold the same about of time of ten hours under any circumstances. This leads to my main question. If I have old home videos the best quality I can get from them transfered to Blu-Ray would only be a good as the video itself, right? It would not be able to make my home videos into digital would it? If it would make it digital would there be any less quality to them? I am concerned about losing old home videos which is why I am asking. In the meantime some have already been transfered to other video tapes and c.d.-r.s.
