that would mean he may have to use the same "picture settings" for each device connected through the receiver going into the one HDMI slot. Picture settings that are good for dvd may not look good for his Bluray. So going into separate inputs means he can adjust for each source better.

Also, the sound from cable is stereo garbage and an occasional movie with 5.1, so an optical cable for audio is just as good as the HDMI cable. Its all compressed audio anyway.
