Default How do you tell type of encode?

Is there anyway once I own a Blu-ray to confirm the type of encoding its using (i.e. MPEG2, AVC, VC-1)? Or its bitrate?

For DVDs there are tools that read the IFO files on the disc and could determine the bitrate while its playing.

I'll admit, I have not yet read my BD player manual or explored the menus much.

Just curious.
