I knew nothing about it the first time I saw it...it surely wasn't what I thought it was going to be. I did not expect it to have such a sci-fi/fantasy bent...and full of unexpected ridiculousness, crazy mad-scientists with steam-powered inventions!

But that's what I loved about it. It was so off-the-wall and original. I truly think it's one of those rare movies that people don't get and therefore trash, but history and pop culture never forget. I've seen shows and/or films reference it's Victorian-era sci-fi aspects...which I found fascinating. I have no idea if that aspect is unique to this film or not (but for me, that's when I first saw it) but it was fascinatingly rendered. Really captured the imagination.
Have you ever seen the original TV show on which this movie is loosely based?

The TV show was really good... and also was a western that featured advanced-for-the-time science-fiction gadgetry.

Nothing about the movie was original... it was poorly/loosely based upon the TV show.

I suppose if you never saw the TV show... you might find things to like about the movie. But most fans of the TV show thought the movie was a horrible thing to carry the same name.

That's where most of the disdain comes from.
