My only criteria is no blind buys. I have blind bought two movies/TV shows and I have not liked either one. So I will only buy films/TV shows that I have seen. I could care less about trying to see it on blu ray before I buy it though. If I do not have the DVD, then I will buy the blu ray automatically. And I almost always wait until things are on sale. Gives me more money for other blu rays that way.
