I'm a proud owner of the UK trilogy set. I watched it sometime last year, and forgot how great the first movie was. I believe it is 1080i, but it looks pretty sharp. It doesn't have extras, and some 50hz content on the disc prevents playback on most region-A players, so a US release is more desirable.
