The plasmas are reputed to both buzz and generate more heat and the combination of all those factors is driving me towards the Sony.
The reported problems with these sets do bother me. But I've never seen any of these problems in a retail environment. I've been to five different stores and I've never seen the 'crease' in the Sony that many complain about. And likewise, I've never seen fluctuating black levels in the Panny, although I did see a YouTube video that demonstrated it.
J&R in NYC is currently selling the 55HX929 for only $2400, but they don't have any in stock (although they are accepting orders). They have no expected date. They're also selling the Panny 55VT30 for an incredible $1800. Up until about two weeks ago, it was still $2800. They're an authorized dealer for both brands and they're usually not the biggest price discounter, so I'm a little surprised, but hey. I think large screen sales have been slow and Sony and Panasonic are providing dealer incentives to get rid of inventory. (But if that's the case, then why has J&R been out of stock on the HX929 for so long?). But I think that both these sets are incredible bargains at that price level. I wouldn't have expected these prices until the newer models are announced at CES in January of 2012.

My decision was between the 55HX929 and the 55VT30. I heard the VT30 have had some problems. I really like the picture on the 929 and CNET review says its the best LED they've tested ever. In the end it is viewer preference and to me the Sony looks the best.
