Though there is no Mario of PS, Crash Bandicoot and Laura Croft were the original two fighting for the position. Crash won and was featured in print and TV ads all the time. However, as someone noted, Naughty Dog sold out to other platforms as well (which is odd considering I am under the impression Sony produced the character and Crash games) and Crash fell from his mascot status. Solid Snake was also a contender, but he fell into the Cloude Stryfe Category of coolness without affiliation.

Cloud Stryfe, while certainly one of the coolest characters in video game history by far, is not a mascot at all for any PS console (though FF7 completely changed the face of video game history and I cant think of any other game that spawned so many DIRECT sequels). While the FF series screams Sony these days, Cloude is more across the board pop-culture not necessarily associated with one system or platform of gaming (Square still produces for Nintendo and Internet gaming).

I would say that in our current market and continuous success in a video game series, Ratchet and Clank are THE choice for mascot. They are available on no other platform (other than the new cell phone game), produced by SCEA and have been colossal hits back to back to back to back to back. TOD is one of the coolest looking games on the market for any system and shows very well the abilities of the SIXAXIS controller (a feature widely ignored by the press). My PS3 was a gift, but RaCF:TOD the biggest reason for me to want one. They are cool, witty, and a continuously successful franchise.

I just can't figure out why Insomniac and Sony haven't struck an official deal. My only theory is that RaC is not Sony's creation. Mario IS Nintendo. Sonic IS Sega. Halo IS Microsoft...Sony has yet to release that mega successful recurring franchise character they can use as a face for PS. As was the case with Crash, if you fall into a deal with another company's character, it may look stupid in ten years when that character is available on another system as well (unlike Sega that no longer has a system and still has Sonic as their mascot).
