I have ATV and right now it's pretty much a niche product. You could hack it, of course (basically it's a mini-mac inside) but out of the box it fills a rather interesting piece of the puzzle -- namely, it's a great place to put your home videos (or stuff you have on your computer) onto your TV but past that little else.

I got it for that because I have a TON of home video (I used to have three TV shows on a week) and for that it's perfect, but it doesn't record television (it's not TiVO), the space needed for HD limits it to a few dozen movies or very large drives (I have it hooked up to 2TB of disk space and I could still only store a few hundred regular DVDs if I were so inclined -- probably only a few dozen BD quality) and you do not even want to get into the Apple rental issue (just get on the Apple forums if you want a taste of THAT hassle).

I like it for what it does, but it really feels like a 1.0 product -- perhaps a few years down the road it will really mature (adding TiVO like recording would be a big plus) but for now I can't recommend to anyone unless you really and truly understand its limitations.
