If you have a receiver that can decode Dolby TrueHD and Dts-HD MA (has to be HDMI v1.3 receiver), then you need a Bluray player that can bitstream those formats. (some bluray players can bitstream, some can internally decode, and some cannot do either)

2. Conversely, if my bluray player has on board decoders for these HD audio formats, do I still need an A/V receiver that can handle HD audio formats?
If the bluray player has internal decoding then all you need is an HDMI 1.1 receiver or higher that can process hdmi audio or, any receiver that has Multichannel Analog inputs (some players have multich. analog outs, but not the PS3)
