Spoilers for those who haven't seen it...
I find that sort of sudden end may work in the threatre - as Killer Joe was based on a play - where the curtain suddenly comes down but, on the whole, not for film where it instead comes across as a lazy cop-out. It's supposed to make you wonder what happened next but instead I just thought about how the filmmakers didn't know what came next. It didn't come across as clever, it came across as lazy and a bit smug.
I'm not saying this sort of ending can't be used in film, either as a karmic punchline (e.g. Lock, Stock) or as a lack of catharsis to get you speculating about where the characters go from here (a film that springs to mind is very recent so I'll put the name in spoiler tags - [Show spoiler]The Hunt , which is an incredible film if anyone can find it showing). But here it didn't work at all for me.

Agree with that. Great post. Thought very much the same, can see it working as a play a really good point.
Sometimes I appreciate an ending that makes me ponder what happens to the characters. Sometimes I do prefer the ending to be finished.
Not sure if you've seen Kill List (totally different films) but I would have preferred a more clearer end. This is similar for me, I think I'd have preferred Killer Joe to have a more final end as well.
Enjoyed it though.
