M is a good one, and was my first introduction to Lang. Now I can't get enough Lang on home video.
But of all Lang's films, great and small, the one that I consider his hands-down masterpiece is
Die Nibelungen. This takes nothing away from
Metropolis; I love Lang's futuristic machine-world classic that has become his best known gift to cinema. But
Die Nibelungen takes silent film to an even more epic and powerful level that, thanks to Kino, I now have in my collection. It is lesser known than
Metropolis, and perhaps forever damned to be tainted by its association with the Nazis, who "kidnapped" the film in later years and used it as a tool for propganda, much to Lang's horror.
Lang is just amazing; it is an incredible feat for a director to have so many groundbreaking influential films in his body of work.
