I suspect hundreds of such small cracks will show between Hobbit and LOTR. That's okay, as long as it isn't something that is "forgotten" or made up conveniently by the writers (Star Wars has many examples).

Well to be fair though in FotR there are a few different moments of 'forgetfulness' if you recall. Remember Gandalf asked Bilbo where the ring was and he said it was in the mantelpiece? and it was actually in his pocket? and a gain when he was walking out the door it was still in his pocket, as if he completely forgot literally within those minutes.
