In the late 70's/early 80's, the X-Men came back with a vengeance after barely keeping the title afloat for over half a decade (remember the five years of reprint issues....sold as newly-numbered issues of The Uncanny X-Men? 1970 to 1975).
After that, the X-Men
RUINED the Marvel Universe. There's wayyyyy too many of 'em. They have a dozen too many books, too. Their rise to popularity began the worst age of Marvel, and of comics in general (1980-present).
They have ceaseless soap opera, and I guess I'm just not PC enough to care about their issues, and that ruins their stories for me, pretty much.
There have been a few good X-Men stories through the years, but not many, IMNSHO.
I honestly hope that Fox keeps them forever, and they never,
ever, EVER get to interact with the rest of Marvel's characters on the big screen.....or the small screen.
