A story told by Irons at a later date goes that the only reason he took the role was that he needed some cash urgently to make major repairs to his castle in the south of ireland. DnD landed on his desk, was a few weeks away from shooting, and he agree'd. Basically he played the role with all of the gusto of a pantomime villain. He was one of the best things about it, but that's not saying much. It really is evident that director courtney solomon didn't have a clue what he was doing...
