I was underwhelmed with The Hobbit when I saw it in the theater. I admit my expectations were very high. As others have written, one can complain about the erratic pacing, the lack of character development, parts of the story seem irrelevant, the movie is bloated, etc.
But having said that, it's Middle Earth, and I love being there. Peter Jackson is taking fans on a tour of ME over three movies that clearly go beyond The Hobbit. I am a big fan of LOTR and I have the extended version. I do not have the theater version, and have no desire to have it. The way I see it, I can find fault with The Hobbit, but if you want to return to Middle Earth and enjoy the time you are there, then the longer the better.
It reminds me of Woody Allen's joke:
Two women walk out of a restaurant, One woman says, "The food was not very good", and the other woman says, "Yes, and the portions were small!"
Okay, The Hobbit is not perfect. But I want the largest portion I can get. I'll eagerly wait for the EE.
