I have a western digital mybook 500gig connected to my 60gig ps3 via usb. The only problem I have is every now and then I have unplug the usb cord so it can recognize the drive. Long story short I have none of the problems you are having maybe you do have to reformat your drive but then again I know my drive isn't in a FAT32 format.
